Autopsy: Canadian filmmaker Rob Stewart drowned after suffering acute hypoxia

Famed Canadian documentary filmmaker and conservationist Rob Stewart died from drowning after succumbing to acute lack of oxygen — or hypoxia — at the surface of the ocean in late January, according to a Monroe County medical examiner’s report obtained by The Reporter/Keynoter. The autopsy was conducted by Dr. Thomas Beaver, who lost his contract as medical examiner in May. Beaver would not release the report when it was requested Aug. 2, blaming this newspaper for his situation. “Let me see... You trash my reputation ending my career and you have the gall to ask me for something,” Beaver wrote in the text. The six-member state Medical Examiners Commission ruled that Beaver’s contentious relationship with almost all the Keys officials with whom his office must work and cooperate made his reappointment untenable.
