Preliminary reports from the team found extensive shifting of sand and heavy sediment accumulation, which can smother and prevent corals from getting enough sunlight, as well as some structural damage...

U.K. offers famed Arctic shipwrecks

By Colin Dwyer - NPR.org In an act befitting "our long shared history and the closeness of our current bilateral relationship," the U.K. has announced it will give Canada the recovered shipwrecks of John Franklin, a British explorer who sought to chart an unnavigated section of the Northwest Passage in the Arctic in the 1840s — and died in the attempt, along with all of his crew. "This exceptional arrangement will recognise the historical significance of the Franklin expedition to the people of Canada, and will ensure that these wrecks and artefacts are conserved for future generations," British Defense Minister Michael Fallon said in a statement published Tuesday. For more than a century and a half, the resting place of the two vessels remained a mystery — until a team of archaeologists finally found and identified the HMS Erebus in 2014. Just two years later, researchers acted on a tip...

More acidic oceans 'will affect all sea life'

Image copyright JAGO-TEAM/GEOMAR Image caption Cold water corals should be more resilient All sea life will be affected because carbon dioxide emissions from modern society are making the oceans more acidic, a major new report will say. The eight-year study from more than 250 scientists finds that infant sea creatures will be especially harmed. This means the number of baby cod growing to adulthood could fall to a quarter or even a 12th of today's numbers , the researchers suggest. The assessment comes from the BIOACID project , which is led from Germany. A brochure summarising the main outcomes will be presented to climate negotiators at their annual meeting, which this year is taking place in Bonn in November. The Biological Impacts of Ocean Acidification report authors say some creatures may benefit directly from the chemical changes - but even these could still be adversely affected indirectly by shifts in...

An Underwater Photographer’s Guide to DEMA 2017

Orlando is known as “The City of Beautiful.” And this central Floridian city will be especially stunning in a little over a week when all the greatest underwater imaging people gear rolls into town for DEMA 2017. The annual trade show held by the Diving Equipment & Marketing Association is the largest gathering in the industry. Nearly 10,000 attendees get up to date with hot new trends in travel, meet scuba celebs, and attend parties (though there’s only one that matters). There’s a lot going on at the show. And if you’re an avid DPG reader, then what matters most is likely all things underwater imaging. Fortunately, we’ve put together this handy “Underwater Photographer’s Guide to DEMA 2017,” which is designed to help maximize your experience in Orlando. Of course, make sure to note the details for this year’s DPG-Wetpixel Underwater Imaging Party . Not going to make it to...

Kirby Morgan Dive Systems announced  that they are halting production of the EXO-BR mask effective immediately.   What does this mean for EXO-BR Owners?  EXO parts are also being discontinued and the inventory of parts is limited to what is currently in stock. Authorized Kirby Morgan Repair Facilities are still able to perform service on the masks, however parts are limited. Products Affected (Discontinued): Part        Number Description  300-036 EXO-BR Mask, No Communications  300-037 EXO-BR with Communications Posts  300-038 EXO-BR with Communications, MWP To discontinue the EXO-BR Mask was purely a business decision. It was not based on quality, performance, or any safety factors whatsoever involving the EXO-BR Mask. Discontinuation of the mask was based on the fact that the tooling is very worn and out of date. Unfortunately, it is no longer cost effective to keep the tooling in working condition. The EXO-BR manual and technical support will...

Buffalo's Underwater Recovery Team: What does it do?

Black water. Raging water. Ice-covered water. The city's rivers and lake can be at their worst when Buffalo's Underwater Recovery Team is called into action. On alert 24 hours a day, the team is one of the busiest special squads in the Police Department and can be called upon to investigate drownings, help with boats in distress or search for lost evidence. "It's not for the faint at heart," said Capt. Fredric Foels of the City of Tonawanda Police Department. "Look at the conditions they're dealing with out there, and who knows what the visibility is like." When you talk to Foels and others familiar with underwater recovery teams, you're certain to hear about the risks they face every time they enter the water. Foels says it's not uncommon for those teams to encounter swift, dangerous conditions where the visibility is so bad, divers are required to "swim and feel."...
