Arctic warming happening faster than previously thought, report says

An international summary of five year's worth of research on Arctic climate change concludes the top of the world is getting warmer faster than anyone thought. And if it all sounds interesting but a little far removed from southern concerns, David Barber has news for you. "There are very clear linkages there and they've been occurring consistently for the last 10, 15 years," said Barber, one of Canada's top ice scientists and a prominent contributor to the report. Story continues below advertisement "Most people don't understand how bad it is." The report completed for the Arctic Council, the group of eight countries that ring the North Pole, was released last week. It represents the work of 90 scientists from around the world and summarizes the most recent research from 2010 to 2016. Blue Planet II episode highlights how plastic is killing our precious sea creatures

B lue Planet II’s latest episode focuses on how plastic is having a devastating effect on the ocean and slowly poisoning our sea creatures. Episode four of the acclaimed documentary series , Big Blue, presented by Sir David Attenborough, features a heart-wrenching segment on a hawksbill turtle tangled in a plastic sack, before being freed by a camera operator. It also details how plastic pollution is killing whales through chemical contamination, showing a pod of pilot whales being emotionally affected by the death of a newborn calf. “Surviving in the open ocean has always tested animals to their limit, but today they face a new additional threat. Plastic,” says the broadcaster. The show’s producers revealed to  BBC Newsbeat the extent of the plastic problem they witnessed while filming the series. The world's biggest grave robbery: Asia’s disappearing WWII shipwrecks

Dozens of warships believed to contain the remains of thousands of British, American, Australian, Dutch and Japanese servicemen from the second world war have been illegally ripped apart by salvage divers, the Guardian can reveal. An analysis of ships discovered by wreck divers and naval historians has found that up to 40 second world war-era vessels have already been partially or completely destroyed. Their hulls might have contained the corpses of 4,500 crew. Governments fear other unmarked graves are at risk of being desecrated. Hundreds more ships – mostly Japanese vessels that could contain the war graves of tens of thousands of crew killed during the war – remain on the seabed. The rusted 70-year-old wrecks are usually sold as scrap but the ships also contain valuable metals such as copper cables and phosphor bronze propellors. Experts said grave diggers might be looking for even more precious treasures – steel...

RAID Unveils New Skill Demo Videos

Dive training agency RAID International is unveiling a brand new set of skill demo videos at DEMA Show 2017 that will be part of their entry-level, Open Water 20 certification course. The course starts with online work, where the students takes a series of quizzes and exams after reading through the manuals provided by the RAID website. With the addition of the new instructional videos, students now have the ability to see how the skills should be performed, before ever entering the water. Paul Toomer, the director of RAID, sat down with DeeperBlue.com to tell us more about these videos: “What makes them unique is they’re all done in neutral buoyancy, and they’re all in trim. There are no skills done on the knees of either the diver or the instructor, so throughout the whole course the student is perfecting their buoyancy.” Toomer himself, as well as another RAID distributor and instructor...
