Hundreds of scientists urge Trump to withdraw from U.N. climate-change agency

More than 300 scientists have urged President Trump to withdraw from the U.N.’s climate change agency, warning that its push to curtail carbon dioxide threatens to exacerbate poverty without improving the environment. In a Thursday letter to the president, MIT professor emeritus Richard Lindzen called on the United States and other nations to “change course on an outdated international agreement that targets minor greenhouse gases,” starting with carbon dioxide. “Since 2009, the US and other governments have undertaken actions with respect to global climate that are not scientifically justified and that already have, and will continue to cause serious social and economic harm — with no environmental benefits,” said Mr. Lindzen , a prominent atmospheric physicist. Signers of the attached petition include the U.S. and international atmospheric scientists, meteorologists, physicists, professors and others taking issue with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change [UNFCCC], which was formed in 1992...

Northern Beaches contest takes aim at suicide prevention

Surf Culture Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 February, 2017 - A surfing event will be held at Dee Why Beach on Sunday 30 April to raise funds and awareness for Lifeline Northern Beaches. The Lifeline Classic will involve fundraising teams, each with a pro surfer, who will compete in a tag-team format. The CEO of Lifeline Northern Beaches, David Thomas, said suicide is our national emergency. “We have more than a problem on our hands," Mr Thomas said. “When you look at the statistics, the biggest killer of 25 - 44 year olds is suicide. It’s a crisis and the peninsula is no different - our community has felt the devastating effects of this far too often.”  Thomas said the Lifeline Classic is a way of connecting with the community through one of our favourite pastimes with which the Northern Beaches are renowned for - surfing. “Hopefully this is a...

13 Things You Should Give Up If You Want To Be Successful

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” ― Jim Rohn People we spend the most time with, add up to who we become. There are people who are less accomplished in their personal and professional life, and there are people who are more accomplished than us. If you spend time with those who are behind you, your average will go down, and with it, your success. But if you spend time with people who are more accomplished than you, no matter how challenging that might be, you will become more successful. Take a look at around you, and see if you need to make any changes. Original link Original author: Cvijetic

Kelly Slater calls for the culling of sharks off Reunion Island after another death

Kelly Slater calls for the culling of sharks off Reunion Island after another death
After the 20th shark attack off Reunion Island since 2011 occurred earlier this week, the world’s greatest surfer made a comment that “there needs to be a serious cull on Reunion and it should happen everyday.” RELATED: Bodyboarder killed in shark attack after warning signs were vandalized Reunion Island’s own Jeremy Flores posted a tribute photo and heartfelt message about the 26-year-old bodyboarder Alexandre Naussance who was the victim earlier this week. Kelly Slater responded in the comments with the calling for a shark cull, which is essentially the killing of sharks to keep their population under control. Slater’s comment is as follows: “Honestly, I won’t be popular for saying this but there needs to be a serious cull on Reunion and it should happen everyday. There is a clear imbalance happening in the ocean there. If the whole world had these rates of attack nobody would use the ocean...

Harvard scientist worries we’re ‘reverting to a pre-Enlightenment form of thinking’

Harvard scientist worries we’re ‘reverting to a pre-Enlightenment form of thinking’
George Q. Daley, dean of Harvard Medical School. (courtesy of Harvard Medical School, Stephanie Mitchell, Harvard Staff Photographer) George Q. Daley, the new head of Harvard Medical School,   knows what it's like when presidential politics collides with science. Daley   was a leading stem cell scientist   back in 2001 when President George W. Bush suddenly barred federal funding for research on new embryonic stem cells — a gesture to Republican antiabortion backers that, many believe, put a chill on   one of the most cutting-edge areas of biology. The move turned many scientists, unexpectedly, into activists. The diplomatic Daley helped  Harvard create an institute in 2004 to   work around the federal funding restrictions;   California   bucked the Bush administration by devoting its own  state funds to the research . President Barack Obama   eventually  reversed the executive order   in 2009, allowing federal funds to be used; today, embryonic stem cell based therapies...
